This portion of Al-Kitab takes its name from people to whom it was originally written–followers of ‘ISA AL-MASIH who lived in the city of Corinth. Corinth is located in the the southern portion of the country which is now called Greece. Corinth was a major commercial and business centre. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter. The record of his first visit to Corinth is found in Acts chapter 18, about 3 years before the writing of this letter. A major purpose of this letter was to deal with a problem of sin in the local congregation of Corinth. In addition, several other important subjects are addressed, including marriage, the role of conscience, preserving unity in a local congregation, spiritual gifts given to followers of ‘ISA AL-MASIH, the nature of God’s love, and questions about the resurrection of the body from death.
