This portion of Al-Kitab takes its name from people to whom it was originally written–followers of ‘Isa al-Masih who lived in the city of Philippi. Philippi was located in the eastern portion of what is now called Greece. Philippi was the location of the first local congregation of followers of ‘Isa al-Masih to be established in Europe. The apostle Paul (pbuh) wrote this letter 10 years after being imprisoned in Philippi (see Acts 16:16-34). Paul (pbuh) had performed a mighty miracle and quite a number of people then believed the Injil. When Paul (pbuh) wrote this letter he was in prison in Rome for proclaiming the Injil. He writes of his faith in ‘Isa al-Masih, and of his joy no matter how bad circumstances might be. He thanks the believers for how they helped him financially when he was in need.
