This portion of Al-Kitab takes its name from its author, Prophet Nahum (pbuh). He was a Hebrew prophet who spoke for Allah concerning the capital city of Assyria, Nineveh. Even though Allah had chosen to use the Assyrians to punish Bani-Israel for their sins, they had become worthy of judgment themselves because of their misuse of power. Prophet Nahum’s message of judgment on Assyria and his news of the restoration of the Jews, gave the Jews comfort and encouragement. From the scripture of Prophet Yunus(pbuh) we learn about the repentance of the people of Nineveh and Allah’s delay in punishing them. From the scripture of Prophet Nahum (pbuh) we learn that the people of Nineveh returned to their former evil ways and so Allah finally punished them. The obedience of one generation does not guarantee that the next generation will be obedient. Everyone should take warning from the case of Nineveh.
