Joel

This portion of Al-Kitab takes its name from its author, Prophet Joel (pbuh). A key phrase found in this scripture is “the day of Allah” (1:15; 2:1,11,31; 3:14). The most notable subject dealt with in Joel is the attack of locusts in chapter one. It appears that at some point in the prophet’s life his country had suffered a destructive plague of locusts. Joel (pbuh) compares the plague of locusts to an advancing army of soldiers and the great and terrible day of Allah which will come in the future.

The tone of Joel suddenly changes in chapter 2, verse 18, from one of doom and destruction, to hope and salvation. From that point on the content of Joel’s prophecy is much more positive. Among other things, it speaks of a day when Allah will pour out his own Spirit on all people.
