Shaya 53

Who has believed our message? To whom has the arm of YAHWEH1 been revealed?2 2For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He has no beauty or majesty to attract us to him; and when we see him, there is nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with suffering. As one from whom men hide their face, he was despised, and we did not respect him.

4Surely he took up our infirmities, and bore our sorrows,3 yet we considered him plagued, struck by God,4 and afflicted. 5But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray;5 everyone has turned to his own way; and YAHWEH has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he did not open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. As a sheep before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off out from the land of the living; for the disobedience of my people he was stricken.6 9They made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, neither was deceit found in his mouth.7

10Yet it pleased YAHWEH to bruise him; he has put him to grief. When you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring. He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of YAHWEH shall prosper in his hand. 11He shall see of the suffering of his soul, and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities. 12Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death, and he was numbered with the lawbreakers.8 Yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the lawbreakers.

As a lamb before its shearer is silent, So he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? Al-Kitab was fulfilled, where it says, ‘He was numbered with the lawbreakers.'” ↩︎
