Do not boast about tomorrow;
\nFor you do not know what a day may bring forth.
\n2<\/sup>Let another man praise you,
\nAnd not your own mouth;
\nA stranger, and not your own lips.
\n3<\/sup>A stone is heavy,
\nAnd sand is a burden;
\nBut a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.
\n4<\/sup>Wrath is cruel,
\nAnd anger is overwhelming;
\nBut who is able to stand before jealousy?
\n5<\/sup>Better is open rebuke
\nThan hidden love.
\n6<\/sup>Faithful are the wounds of a friend;
\nAlthough the kisses of an enemy are profuse.
\n7<\/sup>A full soul loathes a honeycomb;
\nBut to a hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet.
\n8<\/sup>As a bird that wanders from her nest,
\nSo is a man who wanders from his home.
\n9<\/sup>Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart;
\nSo does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.
\n10<\/sup>Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend.
\nDo not go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster:
\nBetter is a neighbour who is near than a distant brother.
\n11<\/sup>Be wise, my son,
\nAnd bring joy to my heart,
\nThen I can answer my tormentor.
\n12<\/sup>A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge;
\nBut the simple pass on, and suffer for it:
\n13<\/sup>Take his garment when he puts up collateral for a stranger;
\nHold it for a wayward woman!
\n14<\/sup>He who blesses his neighbour with a loud voice early in the morning,
\nIt will be taken as a curse by him.
\n15<\/sup>A continual dropping on a rainy day
\nAnd a contentious wife are alike:
\n16<\/sup>Restraining her is like restraining the wind,
\nOr like grasping oil in his right hand.<\/p>\n

17<\/sup>Iron sharpens iron;
\nSo a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.
\n18<\/sup>Whoever tends the fig tree shall eat its fruit.
\nHe who looks after his master shall be honoured.
\n19<\/sup>As water reflects a face,
\nSo a man’s heart reflects the man.
\n20<\/sup>The grave and Abaddon are never satisfied;
\nAnd a man’s eyes are never satisfied.
\n21<\/sup>The crucible is for silver,
\nAnd the furnace for gold;
\nBut man is refined by his praise.
\n22<\/sup>Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with grain,
\nYet his foolishness will not be removed from him.<\/p>\n

23<\/sup>Know well the state of your flocks,
\nAnd pay attention to your herds:
\n24<\/sup>For riches are not forever,
\nNor does even the crown endure to all generations.
\n25<\/sup>The hay is removed, and the new growth appears,
\nThe grasses of the hills are gathered in.
\n26<\/sup>The lambs are for your clothing,
\nAnd the goats are the price of a field.
\n27<\/sup>There will be plenty of goats’\u00a0milk for your food,
\nFor your family’s food,
\nAnd for the nourishment of your servant girls.<\/p>\n
